Visa earnings top estimates as consumers spend on cards

Visa Inc. reported fiscal fourth-quarter earnings that topped estimates as consumers continued to swipe, tap and insert their credit cards to transact globally. Adjusted net income totaled $5.8 billion, or $2.98 a share, up 7% from a year earlier. That slightly exceeded analysts’ estimates of $2.97 a share. Visa said in July that it expected earnings per share to increase by a percentage in the low teens and revenue to grow by low double digits. Revenue grew almost 12% to $10.7 billion, also topping estimates. For the full year, Visa expects net revenue to grow by a percentage in the “low-double-digit” range. Consumer spending has remained resilient across luxury and necessity items, Visa Chief Financial Officer Chris Suh said in an earnings call on Tuesday. As long as travel and e-commerce spending continues and the economy stays stable, the firm anticipates a strong holiday quarter, he said. “In our fourth quarter, continued healthy consumer spending drove net revenue up,” Chief Executive Officer Ryan McInerney said in a statement. “As technologies like AI-driven commerce, real-time money movement, tokenization and stablecoins converge to reshape commerce, our focus on innovation and product development positions Visa to lead this transformation.” Read More: Visa Tests Pre-Funded Stablecoins for Cross-Border Payments During the period, Visa ended its open-banking operations in the US, which provided technology to help third parties such as financial-technology firms access customer-account data, amid regulatory uncertainty and a changing competitive landscape. On the earnings call, McInerney said Visa is now powering live “agentic” transactions, where an artificial-intelligence-powered agent can checkout on a user’s behalf. The firm has also rolled out a framework that helps merchants verify agents and avoid malicious bots on these types of transactions. Ultimately, the goal is for AI agents to make purchases on behalf of humans without intervention, McInerney said. “That, we haven’t really seen in the market place today, but we’re working very hard with the platform players to ensure that the capabilities are in place to enable that,” he said.
