Two senior officials at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau continue to work on auto financial markets-related matters, despite the tumult and pending firings at the bureau spurred by the Donald Trump administration, a source inside the CFPB tells Bank Automation News‘ sister publication, Auto Finance News.

John McNamara, principal assistant director of markets, and Christopher Johnson, associate director in the division of consumer response and education, continue to undertake the “markets” work of the CFPB, the source said.

The CFPB issued reduction-in-force notices to as many as 1,483 of its more than 1,700 total staffers April 18, only to have the terminations stayed by a court. The terminations remain pending at publication time.

The markets department has reportedly been hard hit by the layoffs.

Both McNamara and Johnson joined the CFPB in 2011. They are among the CFPB’s most tenured officials.

Markets has been a major component of the CFPB operation. Designed to ensure that the CFPB’s rulemaking is as “smart” as possible.

Markets operates separately from the CFPB’s enforcement arm.
