Capital One consumers started reporting technical issues on Jan. 16 as account services, deposits and payment processing outages continue to affect consumer, small business and commercial clients today.
“System restoration is underway but not yet fully operational,” a Capital One spokesperson told Bank Automation News in a statement.
The bank attributed the outage to a “technical issue with a third-party vendor,” on social media platform X.
The vendor is tech provider FIS, which told BAN in a statement: “FIS has restored access to the applications impacted by the power outage. We are working with the impacted clients to finalize the posting of transactions that occurred while systems were offline as quickly as possible.”
As of 11:30 a.m. ET today, nearly 3,000 complaints of the outage were still being reported, according to website Downdetector, which published the status of outages in real time. The problems reported on Downdetector include issues with:
- Deposits;
- Account balances; and
- Online login.
Capital One is the latest financial institution to experience a technical glitch. The following FIs reported outages in 2024:
- In October 2024, more than 20,000 Bank of America clients reported outages of online and mobile banking services;
- In August 2024, British challenger bank Monzo experienced an outage; and
- In July cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike was down.
