Which Bank Brands Were All the Buzz in 2018?

JPMorgan Chase had the highest “buzz ranking” among banks in 2018, according to YouGov’s Brand Index, an annual poll measuring which brands are considered the best by consumers.

Participants were asked, “If you’ve heard anything about the brand in the last two weeks, through advertising news or word of mouth, was it positive or negative?” The Buzz Rankings are net scores showing brands with the highest average scores from the beginning of a given year to the end of it.

Chase scored an 8.4, which is an increase from 2017, when it scored a 6.7. Following Chase, Capital One Bank ranked second, Citibank third, PNC Bank fourth, and TD Bank fifth.

All of the brands included in the Brand Index were tracked at least for 6 months out of the year. The full results of 2018’s buzz scoring for banks can be viewed below:

There seems to be a slight correlation between the biggest banks in the U.S. and their buzz score, as Chase ranks highest on both lists, having over $2.5 trillion in assets. Making the biggest improvement in Buzz Score from 2017 to 2018 was Wells Fargo, the third largest bank in the U.S. with assets of over $1.9 trillion. However, this wasn’t the case for all of the largest U.S. banks in the top five: Goldman Sachs is ranked the fifth-largest U.S. bank, with assets at $917 billion, but didn’t even make the Brand Index list.

As reported by Bank Innovation, Chase leads U.S. banks in the domain of mobile banking. This is likely the reason why so many consumers have responded with positivity towards Chase, which is also reflected in the 2018 customer satisfaction report in J.D. Power’s annual National Banking Satisfaction Study, in which it ranked third in mobile customer satisfaction for the nation’s top banks.
