Fintech Funding Surged 120% in 2018

The year 2018 was a great year for fintech funding across the globe. This is true not only because the total funding was high, but also because there were more investors in fintech than in years before.

In fact, a new report by CB Insights showed there were about 2,745 investors in 2018, representing a five-year high. The report also showed that fintech funding in total increased 120% year-over-year, to $39 billion from $18 billion in 2017, across the globe.

Two of the largest contributors were Bain Capital Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), both of whom doubled the number of fintech deals they made in 2018. The three other key investors were 500 Startups, Ribbit Capital and Omidyar Network.

Another driver for this massive fintech investment trend was the 52 mega-deals that brought in more than $100 million each. These deals included payment company Stripe‘s $245 million funding led by Tiger Global Management, U.K. challenger bank-Revolut‘s $250 million fundraise from Hong Kong-based DST Global, and cryptocurrency exchange platform Coinbase‘s $300 million fundraising, once again led by the New York-based Tiger Global. Of course, all three of these fintechs are now unicorns.

In terms of the number of deals, there was an increase in 2018 to a total of 1,707 deals, compared to 1,488 deals the previous year. As for 2019, it remains unclear if fintech investment will be able to top the numbers of 2018, particularly because many economists predict bleak times in 2019. This prediction, coupled with international events like Brexit and shaky U.S.-China trade relations, could have a negative impact on fintech funding. But possibly not, according to Kurt Spieler, Chief Investment Officer at First National Bank of Omaha.

While investors might tighten the purse strings on certain things, technology is likely not one of them, Spieler told Bank Innovation.

Fintechs like German challenger bank N26 already raised $300 million in a Series D led by Insight Venture Partners last month. And yesterday, London-based GoCardless, which focuses on collecting subscription payments for companies, raised $75 million in Series E funding, led by Adams Street Partners.
