Messenger payments is a debit card-only payments service. Facebook had been slowly rolling out the service since last March. Last month, Facebook said Messenger payments would become available nationwide in the “coming months.” Today’s announcement is nearly a month after that disclosure.

While there has been debate about how much Facebook is paying the networks to facilitate its P2P payments service, Marcus made it clear today that the offering is free to consumers. Whether it will remain free is anyone’s guess.
