TD Bank is driving innovation internally by encouraging employees to submit their tech ideas to enhance the bank’s product offerings and streamline its fiscal 2025.

The Toronto-based TD in 2019 launched iD8 platform, and employees have since submitted more than 100,000 ideas; of those, 10,000 have been implemented, Luke Gee, head of AI and analytics, told Bank Automation News.

During its fiscal 2025, the bank plans to implement 1,600 to 2,000 ideas received through iD8 related to employee and customer experience, Gee said.

“Each line of business decides which ideas they want to pursue,” Gee said. “We don’t just look at the number of implemented ideas, we also prioritize the ideas with the most impact.”

The $1.3 trillion bank has implemented the following employee suggestions:

  • TD’s virtual reality co-op and intern program, a pilot for VR training bankwide;
  • A TD app update that allows customers to submit fraud claims for debit card transactions using their own devices, reducing the need to contact a branch or customer service representative.

This year, TD also launched gen AI pilot programs for operations like software engineering and developing an AI-driven assistant to help customers meet self-service needs, Imran Khan, head of the bank’s innovation arm TD Invent, previously told BAN.

Once an idea is implemented, employees are recognized by their TD divisions and receive appreciation points through the TD Appreciate! program, Gee said, adding that “ideas also get recognized through quarterly and annual recognition programs.”

TD employees have also been named inventors on 1,600 patents filed by the bank since 2019, according to the bank.

As iD8 gains traction, the bank has seen “an influx of AI-related ideas in the past two years,” Gee said.
