BBVA USA today launched Mobile 9.0, its upgraded mobile app, featuring a more comprehensive and real-time view of customer transactions, called “Expanded Transaction Detail.”

“We want to be 100% transparent with the customers,” said Manolo Moure, BBVA USA head of retail customer solutions. “They can really understand what’s going on with every single transaction and what the impact will be on their finances. Of course, it’s particularly relevant for transactions that bring customers into a negative balance.”

Expanded Transaction Detail provides customers with insights on how pending transactions will affect their overall balance, a move by the bank to provide customers with an up-to-date snapshot of their finances. According to Moure, the bank aims to help customers become more financially healthy through Mobile 9.0.

The new app features an “enroll now” button on the login page for the bank to easily onboard new customers. Users also see a bar at the bottom of the app that directs them to relevant actions depending on the screen. For example, customers looking at their checking account will have the quick option to deposit a check, transfer money or manage their debit card.

Before today’s upgrade, customers looking at their checking account only saw the transaction amount and the posted balance after the transaction. Before making any transaction, Expanded Transaction Detail now shows all pending transactions and holds that could impact the balance. It also includes educational tools that explain transaction types, processing dates and effective dates. Customers are warned when they make a transaction with insufficient funds.

According to Javier Rodriguez Soler, chief executive of BBVA USA, the bank worked on the upgraded mobile app throughout 2019. Soler began his new role at the bank about 18 months ago, after spending almost 10 years as the head of strategy and mergers and acquisition at BBVA. Part of his plan to overhaul the bank’s digital channels included bringing in new talent. Moure, for example, joined BBVA USA last summer.

Based in Birmingham, Ala. BBVA USA has more than $93 billion in assets and is a subsidiary of the Spanish banking giant BBVA, which has almost $824 billion in assets and 78.5 million customers. Moure said the bank took lessons from its mobile user experience in other countries when designing Mobile 9.0 Although the bank used some outside vendors, he estimated that 90% of the new app was built in-house.

If the U.S. bank’s mobile app can successfully mimic its Spanish counterpart, it might have a bright future. BBVA took the top spot in the Forrester Banking Wave: European Mobile Apps, Q2 2019 report for the third year in a row. “The Spanish bank continues to outshine its peers thanks to stellar functionality, a set of financial coaching tools with added layers of personalization, and a laser focus on usability,” wrote Aurelie L’Hostis, senior analyst at Forrester Research, in a blog post.

Bank Innovation Build, which takes place Sept. 9-10 as a virtual experience, is a must-attend industry event for professionals overseeing financial technologies, product experiences and services. Register here.
