U.S. Bancorp speeds up long-planned expansion into new states

Bank aims to boost consumer deposits after reining in costs, improving fee income, CEO said

U.S. Bancorp is moving business bankers into new states in the U.S. South, as Gunjan Kedia makes her mark on the largest U.S. regional bank in her second year at the helm.

The Minneapolis-based lender plans to add more than 50 client-facing roles this year in Florida, Georgia and Texas, where it doesn’t have physical branches, as well as Arizona, according to Dee O’Dell, head of business banking sales.

The expansion marks a broader rollout of a new strategy, which has been tested in individual cities such as Las Vegas and Dallas, to pursue business clients in fast-growing regions where U.S. Bancorp isn’t a household retail name. The business bankers will be working with other parts of the bank, such as wealth management and commercial real estate.

“There are more places that we are already considering,” said O’Dell, who oversees about 1,300 bankers working with businesses with as much as $50 million in annual revenue.

Kedia said in July that the bank is eager to boost consumer deposits after it reined in costs and improved fee income last year. Consumer and business banking accounts for about a third of the company’s revenue.

U.S. Bancorp has previously said it’s interested in expanding into new regions, especially the Southeast, dating back to the years before Kedia took over in 2025, but it wasn’t on her top priority list when she transitioned into the new role.

Kedia, a former McKinsey & Co. partner, wanted first to assure investors that she could improve the company’s stock performance with a sense of urgency. Its shares have climbed 62% since then, higher than most of its regional bank peers in the KBW Bank Index during the same period.

“These decisions were made more quickly than we would’ve made similar decisions in the past,” O’Dell said, adding that the plan was formulated earlier this year.
