KeyBank has tapped cognitive banking provider Personetics to drive engagement with clients.

The Tel Aviv-based AI-driven fintech will provide consumers with automated nudges to pay off debt, manage subscriptions or meet savings goals, Personetics Chief Executive Udi Ziv told Bank Automation News.

“In order to understand anyone, we need to go through their data, like transactions, credit cards and bank balances,” Ziv said. Personetics uses machine learning to comb through data and better understand client needs.

Younger generations are looking to bank applications to behave like other apps in their phones, “seamless and intuitive,” Ziv said. Banks should provide seamless service to drive consumer engagement and loyalty, he added.

A KeyBank spokesperson told BAN the bank understands “that client expectations are constantly expanding and evolving, which is why we would like to provide real-time, relevant and personalized experiences to help them take their next step toward their financial dreams.”

Personetics will be connected to KeyBank’s digital banking platform via APIs, Ziv said, adding that the fintech’s low-code model can be implemented fairly easily.

THE BIG PICTURE: Tapping Personetics supports the bank’s strategy of investing in tech and people, Chief Executive Chris Gorman said during KeyBank’s second-quarter earnings call today.

“We accelerated investments in people and technology late last year, and we are already seeing returns on those investments,” Gorman said, adding that the bank is expected to spend $100 million more on tech initiatives this year compared with last year.

The bank has moved 50% of its data and applications to the cloud, he said, adding that such initiatives will not only increase efficiency but also help drive better customer engagement. KeyBank works with Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud for cloud computing needs, according to the bank.

The Cleveland-based bank reported noninterest expense of $1.2 billion, up 7% year over year, driven by higher tech and personnel expenses, according to the bank’s earnings.

The $189 billion bank is also increasing the number of frontline bankers and client advisers by 10% to provide human-touch banking to clients, Gorman said.

BY THE NUMBERS: In Q2, KeyBank reported:

  • Revenue of $1.8 billion, up 20.6% YoY;
  • Net income of $387 million, up 63.3% YoY; and
  • An efficiency ratio of 62.4%, down 780 basis points YoY.

NOTEWORTHY: KeyBank entered into a partnership with fintech Versapay this month to provide customers an AI-driven accounts receivable platform.

The bank is seeing increased real-time payments adoption, specifically among its commercial customers, and is set to exceed 4 million real-time payments transactions this year.

MARKET REACTION: Shares of KeyBank (NYSE: KEY) were down 2.65% from market open to $18.76 as of market close today. Truist has a market capitalization of $20.56 billion.
