J.P. Morgan Payments introduced its omnichannel checkout solution in January to offer a retail shopping experience that is native across shopping channels.
“Merchants need to provide journeys that natively go across channels,” Jean-Marc Thienpont, managing director of omnichannel and biometric solutions at J.P. Morgan Payments, told Bank Automation News.
Online, mobile and in-store shopping often present separate client experiences with different processors managing transactions — and creating added friction.

Which provider takes accountability for issues in the transactions, is one question to be addressed, Thienpont said. “We decided to build that full-stack solution to answer these needs,” he said.
Through the platform, the bank manages all payments; all technology comes from the bank and all shopping experiences look the same, Thienpont said.
Biometric payments
Built in-house at J.P. Morgan, the omnichannel solution creates a seamless shopping experience across all merchant channels, tapping into biometrics to create a streamlined, more secure checkout journey, Prashant Sharma, executive director of biometric payments and identity solutions at J.P. Morgan Payments, told BAN.
By leaning into biometrics, a collection of unique physical characteristics of a person, merchants eliminate the need to run a physical card, type in loyalty numbers and add emails for receipts because that’s all connected to a consumer’s biometrics that are already stored in the bank’s platform, he said.
Instead, consumers enroll once with J.P. Morgan and then use those biometrics with any merchant that accepts the solution.
The new solution speeds the overall checkout time by 90 seconds, Sharma said, and allows merchants to take more orders, see more customers and improve the overall customer experience.
One company that piloted the solution is hospitality business Aramark, a J.P. Morgan spokesperson told BAN.
Integration
Integrating the solution with merchants can take from nine to 18 months, Thienpont said. J.P. Morgan provides APIs, software and hardware to implement the payments capability, and the integration includes pre-integrations with main cash registers, the pilot program and a gradual rollout.
The integration is “not something that happens overnight,” he said.
Payments solutions
The omnichannel solution adds to the bank’s ongoing payments technology innovations.
Since 2023, the bank has made the following investments in its offerings:
- In August, the bank enabled Tap to Pay on iPhone for merchants in the United States; and
- In October, J.P. Morgan and Mastercard teamed up on pay-by-bank.
