AMQP Working Group Transitions to OASIS Member Section

International Open Standards Consortium Expands to Include Initiative for Business Messaging Interoperability within Middleware, Mobile, and Cloud-based Environments

The Advanced Message Queuing Protocol (AMQP) Working Group has become the newest Member Section within the OASIS international open standards consortium. Vendor-neutral and platform-agnostic, AMQP is an open business standard for messaging that avoids proprietary technologies, offering the potential to lower the cost of enterprise middleware software integrations through open interoperability.  AMQP also provides organizations with an easier, more secure approach to passing real-time data streams and business transactions. It has proven success in applications as diverse as global real-time ocean observing and Financial Services Front Office Trading Systems, ensuring information is safely and efficiently transported between applications, among organizations, across distributed cloud computing environments, and within mobile infrastructures. By enabling a commoditized, multi-vendor ecosystem, AMQP creates opportunities for transforming the way business is done in the Cloud and over the Internet.

The newly formed OASIS AMQP Member Section carries forward the mission and operations of the AMQP Working Group, which was founded in 2006 by a collaboration of global financial service institutions, infrastructure providers, and integration, transaction and networking specialists. OASIS AMQP will engage in further development of the protocol, seek ratification as an international open standard, and work to promote adoption worldwide.

“From the outset, the AMQP Working Group intended to submit our protocol to a recognized standards body once version 1.0 was complete. We are proud to have accomplished that goal,” noted John O’Hara, chair of OASIS AMQP and a founding member of the AMQP Working Group. “As part of OASIS, AMQP will receive the recognition it deserves as an international standard.  Companies such as JP Morgan Chase, Bank of America and the Deutsche Börse Group, who are looking for a more cost sensitive approach to middleware interoperability and also require reliable message queuing for their critical business applications, can now seriously consider the AMQP 1.0 protocol solution, and feel confident about drawing on the documentation and community needed for successful implementation and ongoing support.”

“A major factor behind AMQP’s success lies in the fact that the work is largely driven by the user community itself. The AMQP Working Group was founded by financial services companies and key vendors who intimately understand the business requirements and insist on interoperability,” noted Laurent Liscia, Executive Director of OASIS. “We look forward to expanding the breadth of AMQP adoption and participation through OASIS.”

Current members of the OASIS AMQP Member Section include Bank of America, N.A. , Deutsche Börse Group, IIT Software GmbH, INETCO Systems Ltd, JPMorgan Chase Bank & Co., Kaazing Corporation, Microsoft Corporation, my-Channels, Progress Software, Red Hat Inc., Software AG, Solace Systems Inc., StormMQ, VMware Inc., and WSO2 Inc. The group is open to all, and new participants are welcome.

About AMQP

The Advanced Message Queuing Protocol (AMQP) is an open standard for business messaging.  AMQP promotes open interoperability that is fundamental to achieving connectivity amongst heterogeneous application systems and enterprise middleware software integrations in a cost effective manner.  AMQP also provides an easier, more secure approach to passing real-time data streams and time-sensitive business transactions between applications, among organizations, across distributed and cloud computing environments, and within mobile infrastructures. Founded by some of the world’s largest financial firms and software vendors, the AMQP Working Group has transitioned to OASIS AMQP, an independent Member Section under the aegis of the OASIS international standards consortium.

About OASIS

OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards) is a not-for-profit, international consortium that drives the development, convergence and adoption of open standards for the global information society. OASIS promotes industry consensus and produces worldwide standards for the business transactions, security, Web services, content management, Smart Grid, and other applications. OASIS open standards offer the potential to lower cost, stimulate innovation, grow global markets, and protect the right of free choice of technology. OASIS members broadly represent the marketplace of public and private sector technology leaders, users and influencers. The consortium has more than 5,000 participants representing over 600 organizations and individual members in 100 countries: http://www.oasis-open.org.

What people are saying about AMQP…

Software AG

A platform independent and vendor neutral protocol like AMQP removes major hurdles in advancing interoperability of message oriented middleware technologies,” said Hans-Christoph Rohland, Senior Vice President-R&D, Software AG.  “As a long-standing member of the AMQP private working group that helped stabilize the specifications, Software AG is very pleased to see the work transition to an established standards body. We look forward to our continued involvement as a member of the AMQP OASIS member section Steering Committee.

Hans-Christoph Rohland, Senior Vice President-R&D, Software AG.

INETCO

As a strong advocate for international standards and a member of the AMQP working group, INETCO is excited by the movement of the AMQP standardization activities to OASIS. The formal standardization of middleware protocols such as AMQP allows for vendors to concentrate on their main strengths and for “best of breed” purchasing decisions to be made by customers. As a leading vendor of real time business transaction monitoring solutions, INETCO is pleased to include AMQP monitoring in its INETCO Insight product; allowing enterprises to extend their management of business transactions within distributed, mobile, cloud, and SOA environments.

Bijan Sanii, President & CEO of INETCO Systems Ltd.

Red Hat

As one of the original co-founders of the AMQP working group, Red Hat is gratified to see AMQP’s acceptance into OASIS,” said Brian Stevens, CTO and vice president, Engineering at Red Hat.  “Red Hat’s vision of interoperable and open messaging has already found success with many deployments of its AMQP messaging offering, Red Hat Enterprise MRG, and the inclusion of native AMQP support directly in Red Hat Enterprise Linux.  Now with the support of OASIS, we expect AMQP to become one of the industry’s key computing standards for everything from infrastructure services to cloud computing.

Brian Stevens, CTO and Vice President, Worldwide Engineering, RedHat

my-Channels

my-Channels is pleased to play an active role in the continued evolution of AMQP as it moves forward with the support of OASIS .   By providing a single standard targeted at enabling interoperability between middleware technologies, AMQP is facilitating improved information flows between the growing number of AMQP compliant messaging technologies in existence today. AMQP compatibility has been an important addition to my-Channels Nirvana and it has become increasingly important to our customers as the AMQP standard gains traction in the marketplace.

Eddie McDaid, Director of Business Development, my-Channels.

VMware

VMware welcomes the acceptance of AMQP into OASIS. This significant milestone promises to bring standardized and interoperable business messaging to a broad cross-section of industry. Through RabbitMQ, VMware has many years of experience working with AMQP and we have demonstrated that AMQP-based integration between multiple languages and platforms can indeed be simple and open. With a wide range of proven use cases from cloud computing, sensor networks, and online gaming, all the way to financial transactions, AMQP should be your first choice for application integration,” commented Adrian Colyer, CTO vFabric, VMware.

Microsoft

As an active member of OASIS, Microsoft is encouraged by the formation of a dedicated Member Section focused on AMQP,” said Anil Nori, Distinguished Engineer in the Business Platform Division at Microsoft. “We hope that our contributions to this effort will serve to advance AMQP as an industry standard specification that can be broadly adopted across the industry, enabling both interoperability between vendor products and increased choice for customers.

Anil Nori, Distinguished Engineer, Business Platform Division, Microsoft

Kaazing

By transitioning its design to the OASIS Consortium, AMQP is opening itself up for wider adoption,” said Jonas Jacobi, CEO and Co-Founder of Kaazing.  “Kaazing, an enabler of the living web, is participating to ensure this open standard supports HTML5 communication.  We are pleased to be part of the AMQP working group.

Jonas Jacobi, CEO and Co-Founder, Kaazing.
