Canadian fintech raises $165M

Toronto-based fintech KOHO Financial Inc. secured $165 million this week over three separate funding vehicles.

This is one of the largest fintech funding rounds ever in Canada, BetaKit reported Tuesday.

The company, which partners with People Trust, provides banking services through a mobile app and pre-paid Visa card. On Tuesday, KOHO announced:

  • A $117.7 million series D funding round;
  • A $39 million debt financing; and
  • $7.9 million from secondary market, where investors buy and sell securities they already own.

U.S.-based holding company Eldridge led the funding round with additional funds from previous investors Drive Capital, TTV Capital and Portage Ventures. BDC, HOOPP and Round 13 Capital also participated in the round.

The new funding puts KOHO “very close” to a $1 billion unicorn valuation, the company told BetaKit.

The Miami-based company, founded in 2020, will use the money to scale B2B supply financing for small- to medium-sized businesses in Mexico via its Workeo program, which issues Keo American Express.

Crypto exchange FTX raises $400M, then buys competitor

Crypto exchange FTX announced Monday that it raised $400 million in a series C funding round. Following tight on the heels of that news, the Bahamas-based company announced Wednesday the acquisition of its Japanese competitor Liquid for an undisclosed amount.

The funding round brings FTX’s valuation to $32 billion. The company has raised a total of $1.8 billion over six rounds in six months, according to Crunchbase.

The money will support product rollout and expansion with additional licenses around the world, FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried said in the announcement.

“With the ongoing support from our dedicated investors and userbase, FTX will look to continue interacting with regulators to facilitate access to digital assets in a safe and compliant manner,” Bankman-Fried added.

Participating in the round were Temasek, Paradigm, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board, NEA, IVP, SoftBank Vision Fund 2, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Steadview Capital, Tiger Global and Insight Partners.
