TD Bank’s digital strategy is showing results.

The bank said it’s investing heavily in digital channels, making it the largest digital bank in Canada. TD noted that, according to App Annie data, the bank is ranked No. 1 in consumer adoption,  engagement and satisfaction among top retail banks in Canada.

The bank saw a net income of $2.9 billion for the first quarter of 2020, compared to $2.4 billion reported in last year’s first-quarter earnings report. CEO Bharat Masrani said that putting customers first is what motivates the bank to invest in digital capabilities.

“Our omnichannel strategy is about giving customers the advice they need to feel more confident about their financial future,” Masrani said during an earnings call this week. “The investments we are making to enhance our capabilities, improve our productivity and transform the bank for the digital age, are delivering tangible benefits for our customers today, while positioning us to serve them better in the future.”

According to Masrani, TD Bank’s app ranks No. 1 for engagement and customer satisfaction, and is one of the top 10 banking apps in the U.S. It currently has more than 5 million users in Canada, up from 4.9 million this time last year.

TD’s mobile banking app also has been downloaded more than those of all other Canadian banks, and has the greatest number of monthly active users, as well as the longest average session per user, according to App Annie.

Masrani said the bank’s omnichannel approach to better digital tools has also increased TD’s ranking for its in-store experience alongside digital satisfaction by users.

“That’s what our omnichannel strategy is all about,” he said. “At TD, we’re delivering for our customers in branches and stores, as well as online and mobile. Customers love our design centered digital tools, and the personalization, convenience and security they offer.”

TD Canada metrics

During the earnings call, TD announced that it had 55.5% of digital adoption in Canada, compared to 54.2% this time last year. The investment in digital has also prompted the bank’s customers to complete transactions digitally. More than 86% of financial transactions through TD are self-service transactions, compared to 84.8% of transactions during the first quarter last year.

Rates of U.S. digital adoption for customers during the first quarter was 46.1% compared to 44% at this time last year. The bank also has 3.4 million active mobile users in the U.S., up from 3.1 million active users this time last year.

TD US metrics

“While U.S. retail bank earnings growth was more subdued this quarter, we continue to add new households and grow core accounts. We are driving volume growth through our store network, as well as online and digitally,” Masrani said.

As of July 2019, TD Bank Group had $1.4 trillion in assets and more than 1,000 branches in Canada, and over 1,200 locations in the U.S.
