Goldman invests $28m in German savings and investments firm Raisin

Berlin-based savings and investment startup Raisin landed a $28 million investment from Goldman Sachs on Tuesday to fuel its expansion plans, product roadmap and acquisitions strategy. The funding is part of Raisin’s Series D round, bringing its total amount raised to $220 million.

Frank Freund, the company’s chief financial officer, said the investment will help move Raisin further along its path to diversifying product offerings and market reach. “We started with savings product and fixed-term bonds and then, a bit more than 15 months ago, we branched out to an investment product — that product is only available to German investors and savers currently,” he told Bank Innovation. “We want to to bring this product to other European markets and ease the barrier to entry, or remove them completely, to the extent possible.”

Raisin’s expansion efforts include two new market launches this year that it hasn’t yet announced. In addition, Raisin is planning a U.S. launch in 2020, an effort for which it’s already hired U.S. CEO Paul Knodel, a financial services veteran with senior-level experience at Citigroup, Merrill Lynch, TD Ameritrade and Wealthfront. Freund acknowledged that the U.S. is a competitive market for client acquisition, but he noted that the firm is working with its U.S. investors, including PayPal, Ribbit Capital and Thrive Capital, on its go-to-market strategy.

The new funding also will help Raisin make more acquisitions, building on two it’s already completed: U.K-based customer onboarding platform PBF Solutions in 2017 and Germany-based MHB Bank earlier this year. “[The funding] will give us more flexibility to actively find potential candidates that we think fit well with the Raisin family,” Freund noted.

Raisin began talking to Goldman in 2016 on potential funding possibilities. Talks picked up steam earlier this year, following Raisin’s announcement of its Series D round, according to Freund. The investment aligned with Goldman’s broader interests in retail investors, but the company has no further plans to partner with Goldman at this time.

“We’re obviously happy; it’s a great brand name, they fully understand the model and they run a very thorough diligence process,” said Freund. “We’re proud of having them as a partner and, aside from that, nothing will change in terms of the governance operations on our end.”

Since its launch in 2013, Raisin has brokered more than $14.6 billion worth of transactions for more than 175 customers in 31 European countries. It currently partners with more than 75 banks.
