HSBC partners with Identitii to create an invoicing tool for corporate clients

To simplify invoicing for its corporate clients, HSBC is partnering with Australian company Identitii on a digital accounts receivable tool. Identitii, which went public in 2018, focuses on transaction security.

The application of Identitii’s technology is for a tool called DART, which allows businesses to create a standardized invoicing tool that is easy to use. HSBC’s corporate clients can create the invoice either through HSBC online banking or the HSBC app. DART then sends the invoice to the corporations’ customers via email.

“Developing HSBC DART with Identitii has helped us solve a key pain point in receivables by digitizing the client experience and creating an ecosystem where our clients and their customers connect to improve efficiency through the secure exchange of information,” said Nicholas Soo, head of payment products for Asia-Pacific at HSBC, in a statement.

The standardized invoice also allows the customer to comment within the document and dispute any charges they feel are unfair directly within the digital invoice. Identitii CEO Nick Armstrong said this tool eliminates the back-and-forth between a corporation and its clients that occurs when an invoice is lacking key information or is confusing to fill out.

“Every time [information] is sent in an offline channel and not linked to the payment, there’s a manual process involved,” Armstrong said. Invoices that are filled out incorrectly lead to phone calls, faxes and even direct mail, inefficiencies that DART helps eliminate, he noted. Although DART currently is meant for larger corporate clients, it could be a tool for small and medium-sized businesses down the road, he added.

In addition to improving the invoice process, HSBC and Identitii developed the tool to enhance data security. The tool swaps out sensitive information with a randomized token, and only HSBC has access to the actual invoice data. HSBC and Identitii said this makes invoicing less risky for HSBC corporate clients and their customers.

HSBC’s tie-up with Identitii marks a new chapter in the bank’s ongoing efforts to cater to its business client base. The bank last year reportedly began building a stand-alone digital banking startup for small business customers. It’s touting its ongoing relationships with business clients as a leg up over upstart rivals, having also built out a digital social network for business customers.

Identitii began working on DART as part of Accenture Fintech Innovation Labs at the end of 2015. HSBC was a partner bank in the lab, and Identitii did a proof of concept with HSBC from March to September of 2016. At the end of 2016 and into early 2017, Identitii launched a pilot with SWIFT. The firm signed a contract with HSBC at the end of 2017 and did beta testing with DART at the end of 2018 for four months.

For now, DART is only live in India, but HSBC and Identitii said they plan to launch it in other Asian markets.
