Fintech Unfiltered: Pagaya’s CEO Looks at the State of Asset Management in 2019

The tide is turning, says Pagaya CEO Gal Krubiner. The idea that investors need to look their asset managers in the eye is going away, just as visits to the bank branch are on the decline. This will happen in asset management, Krubiner says, because the proof will be in the returns.

Pagaya uses data science and artificial intelligence to manage $250 million in assets for a host of institutional clients. The company raised a $14 million Series B round August 2018. Pagaya’s proprietary algorithm looks at millions of data points to determine risk across different financial instruments, and to identify emerging alternative asset classes, and generate a return for its institutional investors.

“I think human interaction is going down and down in finance,” Krubiner said in the latest episode of Fintech Unfiltered, recorded at the end of December. “2018 was the year where different big organizations finally understood that [AI] was the way to move forward. I think 2019 will be a year of a lot of planning. If you ask any major institutional investor or big asset manager, in their 2019 work plan, they have deployment of AI.”
