2013 Innovators to Watch: 26 to 30
26. Rob Cummings, Senior Vice President, Online and Mobile Banking, Mountain America Credit Union
Rob Cummings is new to financial services, but not to the core business of satisfying the customer. In his previous role at Seamless Web, Cummings was immersed in the world of customer experience both online and off. As head of digital for MACU, he has said that his credit union is in the business of “making our members’ goals and dreams come true.”
27. Diane Offereins, executive vice president of payment services, Discover Financial Services
Under the leadership of Diane Offereins, Discover has emerged from the shadow of its larger competitors and pivoted from the effects of the Durbin Amendment and the Justice Department’s suit against the other card issuers. Offereins worked to dramatically expand Discover’s retail network and build friendlier relationships with merchants then her competitors have typically enjoyed. Discover also reacted to the consumer shift from credit to debit by offering a checking product. Most notably, Discover under Offereins launched a new flagship product, the It rewards card.
28. Scott Thompson, CEO, ShopRunner
Entrepreneur Scott Thompson knows online commerce. The former Yahoo! CEO was also president and CTO of PayPal and now runs ShopRunner, a online rewards site that simplifies a pain point — long shipping times from vendors. Thompson also worked at Inovant, a subsidiary of Visa. The tumult of his Yahoo! stint notwithstanding, Thompson has financial services in his blood, which is a good thing for banking innovation.
29. Joshua Turnbull, Director, Consulting, Center for Financial Services Innovation
Turnbull began his banking career behind the teller window and moved from there to risk management. We could not think of better training for his current role as director of consulting for the Center for Financial Services Innovation, where he works to help financial institutions serve the underserved and mission-driven organizations. In some ways, this is a lonely endeavor, to which Turnbull brings much-needed (and -appreciated) energy.
30. Dave McClure, founding partner, 500 Startups
Angel investor Dave McClure is the brains behind startup incubator 500 Startups, which funds many financial services companies. Some of its more prominent startups are PayByGroup, Readyforzero, WePay, and Simple. McClure’s past includes work at PayPal, Facebook’s fbFund and Mint.com. Yup, that about covers banking innovation over the last 10 years.
