HSBC Bank USA to Launch Roboadvisor

HSBC Bank USA will join the likes of Betterment, and Acorns by stepping into roboadvisor territory.

For the task, HSBC has tapped Providence, R.I.-based wealth management platform Marstone to deploy a software-based solution that’s an end-to-end digital experience on both the customer-facing side and the backend.

The bank intends to launch a pilot in November, with the hopes that the solution can go live early next year, according to Michael Boardman, head of wealth management at HSBC USA.

The solution will be called HSBC Wealth TrackTM, and will use a standard seven question format that will match the customer with a diversified portfolio of ETFs based on their attitude towards risk.

Marstone’s platform is fully integrated with HSBC’s custodian, Pershing LLC, a Bank of New York-Mellon company, but can also integrate into other custodians if needed, thanks to its partnership with the core processor Fiserv, Margaret Hartigan, CEO and founder of Marstone, explained to Bank Innovation. The platform is also connected to various payment rails such as ACH, she said.

The product will be marketed to HSBC prime and superprime customers, including the bank’s Jade customers, who typically have savings ranging between $1 million to $5 million.

“The solution is nimble and will allow HSBC to fully customize the platform, from implementing their own branding to determining the investment offering, to make it truly their own,” Hartigan said.

For HSBC, “the value proposition fits into the overall goal to become the top bank for international customers,” Jeremy Balkin, head of Innovation at HSBC, told Bank Innovation.

Over the past few years, HSBC has invested $130 million to transform its retail banking business, from renovating its flagship office in New York to partnering with Softbank in bringing Pepper, a robot, to its branch to assist customers with transactions like balance checks, and getting information on personal loans and mortgages. The partnership with Marstone is part of this plan, Balkin said.

“Wealth management and retail banking are under one unit in our bank,” Balkin said. “We offer wealth management services to customers, so on this project, we (innovation team) worked with (Michael Boardman, head of wealth management) on figuring out how we can use technology and innovation to give our customers a convenient, cost-effective and seamless way to invest through a digital interface.”
